Rama Navami in 2022 is on the Thursday, 02nd of April (02/04/2022).
Ram Navami is a festival celebrated by Hindus as the birthday of lord Ram, who is the seventh incarnation (avatar) of lord Vishnu. Ram was the son of Ayodhya King Dashrath and his eldest wife Kausalya. Dashrath had 3 wives, namely Kaushalya, Kaikeyi and Sumitra. According to Hindu mythology, king Dashrath was very worried on not having any son so he performed Putrakameshti yagya after which God appeared and gave him a bowl of sweet rice kheer to be eaten by his wives. After which lord Ram was born on this day along with his 3 younger brothers Lakshman, Bharat and Shatrughna to the king Dashrath. Ram Navami falls on the last day of Chaitra Navratri and generally comes in the Gregorian month of April or May every year. Ram Navami occurs on the ninth day of the Hindu lunar month Chaitra.
Ram is a major deity of Hinduism who is considered the Supreme Being and the man of moral values. He is the central character of the ancient Hindu epic Ramayana. Ramayana is an epic, written in Sanskrit language, which covers whole life of lord Ram. He was married to Sita who was the daughter of King Janak of Mithila. Sita was an incarnation of goddess Lakshmi. Ram went to exile for 14 years in order to obey his father's promise to fulfil the wish of his step-mother Kaikeyi who wanted her son Bharat to become king of Ayodhya instead of Ram. Sita and Lakshman accompanied Ram in exile. Ravan kidnapped Sita and took her to Lanka. Ram fought a battle with Ravan and at the end, he killed Ravan and brought Sita back.
This day is very significant and important celebrations take place on this day especially at Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh where many devotees take a dip in the sacred river Sarayu and visit the Ram temple, others, who do not visit temple, worship at home where idol of infant Ram is placed in a cradle. Many people observe vrata (fasting) on this day, they perform puja, do bhajan (a religious song) and kirtan and also read passages of Ramayan (stories of Ram) about Ram's whole life. Bhandara (community meals) are also facilitated by several temples. The streets and houses in Ayodhya are decorated and lit beautifully.
All the devotees not only in India but also across the world celebrate the birth of Lord Ram on the auspicious day of Ram Navami in all pomp and glory. Ram Navami is celebrated in many Indian regions, such as Ayodhya (birth place of lord Ram), Sita Samahit Sthal (Uttar Pardesh), Bhadrachalam (Telangana), Vontimitta (Andhra Pradesh), Sitamarhi (Bihar) and Rameswaram (Tamil Nadu).
