Independence Day in 2022 is on the Saturday, 15th of August (15/08/2022).
Independence Day is celebrated on 15 August every year for India's independence from the United Kingdom on 15 August 1947. On 15 August 1947, free India's first prime minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru delivered his famous speech "Tryst with Destiny". It is one of the three national holidays in India. India's struggle for independence had started in 1857 with the Sepoy Mutiny in Meerut. Independence Day is observed in all Indian states and union territories with flag-hoisting ceremonies, parades and cultural events. The Independence Day is also celebrated as the anniversary of partition of India and Pakistan.
On the eve of Independence Day, the President of India delivers the address to the nation. On Independence Day, the prime minister of India hoists the Indian flag at Red Fort in Delhi and then the Indian national anthem "Jana Gana Mana" is sung. 21 gun shots are also fired in honour of this occasion. After that the prime minister delivers the speech in which he covers past year's achievements and other steps to be taken for nation's development.
Flag hoisting ceremonies and cultural programmes are arranged in all the governmental and non-governmental institutions throughout India. In educational institutes, patriotic songs are sung by the students. Patriotic songs in regional languages are also broadcasted on TV and radio.
