Also famous as Vijayadashami, Dussehra is a Hindu festival celebrated across India, predominantly in north India. In West Bengal, Navaratri and Dussehra are celebrated as Durga Puja. It is celebrated on 10th day of the Hindu month Ashwin which is also the 10th day of Navratri festival. In falls on someday in late September or early October each year.
It is celebrated for the triumph of Ram over the 10-headed demon king Ravan which signifies the triumph of good over evil. Ram killed Ravan because Ravan had abducted Ram's beloved wife Sita. Dussehra is made up of two sanskrit words dasha (Ten) and hara (defeat).
Many plays and dance performances are organised by many social groups as well as schools known as Ramaleela. Dussehra is also seen as an auspicious day to worship tools which are used to earn income. In many offices, machines, tools, safety vaults, lockers, laptops, computers, etc. are worsipped. Some people also worship their vehicles. On Dussehra, big and huge effigies of the demon Ravan are burned across India.
