Eid ul-Adha in 2022 is on the Friday, 31st of July (31/07/2022).
Eid al-Zuha is a muslim festival of great rejoice. It is also called Bakr-Id in India due to the tradition of sacrificing a goat or 'bakr' in Urdu. It is also called Eid ul-Adha in Arabic. In Eid al-Zuha, the word 'Eid' is taken from the Arabic 'iwd' which means 'feast' and zuha is taken from the word 'uzhaiyya' which means 'sacrifice'.
There are two major Eids in the Islamic calendar which are Eid al-Fitr "Lesser Eid" which comes earlier in the year and Eid ul-Adha/ Eid al-Juhaor "Greater Eid" which comes later in the year.
Muslims do special prayers and exchange gifts with one another on this day. Eid al-zuha is celebrated as a festival of sacrifice. It is celebrated in India and in many other countries of the world with joy.
According to Islamic belief, God commanded Ibrahim to sacrifice his son Ismail, in order to test him. Ibrahim agreed to do but before Abraham could sacrifice his son, God provided a lamb to sacrifice instead. Hence on this day, muslims offer Qurbani which means a sacrifice/ slaughter of a lamb as a symbolic repetition of Ibrahim's sacrifice of a lamb in place of his son.
A large number of dishes are prepared on this day including beef or mutton depending on the animal slaughtered in the house. Muslims invite guests and relatives to their house to eat food on this day. They also give presents to them.
