Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated in India to mark the birth anniversary of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi on 2nd October every year. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi also called "Rashtrapita (the father of the nation)" was born on 2nd October 1869 in Porbandar, Gujarat. Gandhi Jayanti is one of the three national holidays of India. Being a national holiday all schools, colleges and offices all over the country remain closed on Gandhi Jayanti.
It is observed throughout India in all the states and union territories of India. The United Nations General Assembly, on 15th June 2007, announced that 2nd October will be celebrated as the International Day of Non-Violence.
Gandhiji played an enormous role and made significant contributions in attaining freedom of India from British rule with the help of non-violence and peace. He also used to fight against many social evils such as untouchability, casteism, etc.
The President, the Prime Minister and many other political leaders pay homage at Raj Ghat (the Samadhi of Mahatma Gandhi) in New Delhi. Prayer meetings and tribute take place on this day at different parts of the country. Painting competitions, essay competitions, etc. are arranged for children. All the countrymen pay homage to this great leader on this day.
