Guru Nanak Jayanti in 2022 is on the Monday, 30th of November (30/11/2022).
Guru Nanak Jayanti is celebrated to mark the birth anniversary of the first Sikh guru "Guru Nanak", the founder of the Sikh faith. It is also called Guru Nanak's Prakash Utsav and Guru Nanak Dev Ji Jayanti. It is a national holiday which ranks as one of the popular festivals in India. As per the Hindu calendar, it is celebrated on a full moon day in the month of Kartik which falls in the month of October or November.
There are total 10 gurus Sikh religion. Guru Nanak, who was the first of the 10 Sikh Gurus, was born on April 15, 1469 at Rai-Bhoi-di Talwandi, near Lahore in the present district of Shekhupura (Pakistan), now Nanakana Sahib. Guru Nanak was a saint and a spiritual thinker who expressed his thoughts in the form of poetry forming the basis of Sikh literature.
It is celebrated with great enthusiasm across India by the Punjabi communities, especially in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh where the Sikh religion is widely prevalent. It is celebrated by the Sindhi community as well.
The celebrations of Guru Nanak Jayanti begins 2 days prior to the actual date and is carried out for 3 consecutive days. A 3-day Akhand Path is conducted in all Gurudwarasduring which the Guru Granth Sahib (the holy book of the Sikhs) is read out from the beginning to the end without a break, which ends on Guru Nanak Jayanti. On Guru Nanak Jayanti, the Granth Sahib is decorated with flowers and carried on a float in a proper procession throughout a village or city. This procession is led by 5 people representing the original PanjPyare (5 Beloved Ones) which ends at a Gurudwara (shrine) where all the devotees come for a community lunch (famously known as langars). The worshippers begin Guru Nanak Jayanti with an early morning procession called 'PrabhatPheri'. The devotees sing 'Gurbani' (hymns from Guru Granth Sahib) in his praise. A prayer called "Rehrasi" is also organised at sunset. In almost all Gurudwaras, elder members conduct Kirtans and Amrit Sanchar ceremonies.The traditional and famous 'Karah Prasad’ is served to all the people visiting Gurudwarairrespective of their religion.
