Formerly known as the Decoration Day, Memorial Day is dedicated to salute all the men and women who served for the United States Armed Forces and sacrificed their lives for the country. The day is usually spent by visiting cemeteries and memorials to pay tributes for their altruism. This is also considered to be the unofficial start of summer season.
It is a public holiday and a day off to schools, colleges and most of the businesses. The American flag is flied at half-mast from dawn till noon. People also spend the day picnicking and holding outdoor sport events and playing patriotic music. Considering that it is a long weekend, many people also take off to a short vacation or visit their relatives at nearby places.
There are two more such days dedicated to the military people viz. Veterans Day, for those who have served in the past, and Armed Forces Day for those who are still serving to the United States Armed Forces.
