When is Labor Day?

Recognized as a federal holiday in 1894, Labor Day falls on the first Monday of September each year to commemorate the collective strength of the labors in different sections of the economy and their contributions to the development of the American economy. The day also remembers various labor movements in the past. Being falling on Monday the weekend becomes a long one and is sometimes referred to as Labor Weekend.

Schools, colleges and most businesses take off the day. The day is also considered to be the beginning of autumn and hence many people plan for the holiday trip before the summer ends. People also plan for house gatherings and parties as schools and colleges start during this period. American football season starts on or around labor weekend.

1882 was the year when the Labor Day was first celebrated by holding large parades to display the strength of labor and trade unions.
