Columbus Day in United States

When is Columbus Day?

People of the United States celebrate the Columbus Day as the day when their country was discovered when Christopher Columbus arrived to the Americas on October 12, 1492. It is considered to be little controversial and some parts of America do not celebrate it. As Christopher Columbus was an Italian, some Italian-American communities organize large scale events by doing special church services.

It is a public holiday in many parts but it is not a day off in some states in the United States. Also some businesses remain open in states that do not observe it as a public holiday.

The day is also considered to be the Italian-American heritage day to display the unity and cultural exchanges between these communities. Specially conducted program in large cities like New York and San Francesco is noteworthy in this regard.
