It is located on the banks of the holy River Vaigai. Meenakshi's meaning is "Lady with the Eyes of a Fish". This temple was actually built in the 6th century BC by survivors of the Kumari Kandam and then was rebuilt by the Nayak ruler Vishwanatha Nayakar around the 16th century. The shrines of Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareshwara are there in the temple which are covered on top by a golden shikhara. The temple has four main entrances one in each direction.
