It is located on the banks of the legendary river Ganga. It is an old belief that when the earth got created, the first ray of light fell on Kashi (Varanasi) where this temple is situated. It is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas. It was constructed Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore in 1780. The two domes of the temple, covered by gold, have been donated by the Sikh Maharaja Ranjit Singh in 1839. It is also believed that a one-time visit to this Jyotirlinga is equal to the visit of the rest of the 11 Jyotirlingas. On every spiritual occasion like Shivratri, Makara Sankranti etc. the king of Kashi (Kashi Naresh) also vists the temple to perform aarti and worship. Around 3000 pilgrims visit the temple on daily basis. Five main Artis are performed daily in this temple.
