It is also known as Sri Harmandir Sahib which means the Temple of God. It is the holiest Gurdwara of Sikhism founded in 1577 by the fourth Sikh guru, Guru Ram Das. Entire upper half of the temple has golden coating. This gurdwara is surrounded by a large lake fed by the Ravi River. It has four entrances in the four directions which is a symbol of the openness of the Sikhs towards all people and religions. The main north entrance is known as the Darshani Deori. Verses from the Granth Sahib are written on the doorway. Around 100000 pilgrims visit here daily.
