Juneteenth is celebrated in order to commemorate the liberation or the end of slavery of African-American slaves in the United States at the end of the Civil War. It is also observed for celebrating African-American culture.
On January 1st 1863, President Abraham Lincoln had issued the Emancipation Proclamation outlawing slavery in the original confederate states. On June 19th, 1865, Union Army general Gordon Granger enforced the freedom of enslaved people in Texas which was the last held out state in the confederacy.
